Mississippi Mother Who Sued Doctor for Child’s Brain Injuries Gets $2.6M

Late last month, a Mississippi jury returned a $2.6 million verdict to Ashley Koenig Williams, a woman who sued a physician saying his inaction caused her child to have permanent brain injuries. Williams, who was awarded the money almost nine years after her child's birth, filed the malpractice lawsuit against Dr. William Bush. Her legal team states that a sonogram in November 2011 showed the baby had growth restrictions. The obstetrics and gynecology specialist diagnosed the fetus with poor growth, but did not refer her to a specialist or monitor the pregnancy until the baby was born in January 2012. The doctor later claimed his diagnosis wasn’t real and was done only to ensure he got Medicaid payments. "The jury saw through the lie" before returning the verdict, attorney Shane Langston said. The baby suffered a brain bleed and catastrophic, permanent brain injuries including cerebral palsy. He has a life expectancy of 25 years.
